Building Safety

Building Safety

The Problem
The Problem

Across the UK and beyond, societies have built using different methods, materials, and designs for hundreds of years. Over a considerable period, these buildings may change from their original use. These buildings contain residential properties, commercial, retail, health, and entertainment spaces.

Historically, information on how a building was designed, constructed, managed, and maintained may have been inaccessible, fragmented, out of date, or nonexistent.

Such a disconnect between people and information exacerbates tragedies across the world. The tragic events at Grenfell cost the lives of seventy-two people. Many examples exist in the world today of tragedies in residential, public, commercial, and workplace environments. By using accurate data, some of these events may have been foreseen, remediated, or planned for.

Silos
Silos

Over many years, organisations have wrestled with numerous systems for different activities and across disparately located teams. This can make accessing key information difficult and challenging.

By creating these silos, the key people responsible for overseeing workstreams are not able to easily access all they require in one place and in a format that is simple enough to give the quick summaries and positions that they require. This also impacts their ability to respond quickly to requests for information about their governance arrangements, as well as when responding to emergencies.

Accessing information for emergency services should be a key consideration for any organisation. Information that is readily available to fire and rescue services, ambulances, and police could save vital time when attending an incident.

Sharing information with residents, service users, staff, and contractors should be facilitated easily and without the need to resort to lengthy and complicated training.

Change
Change

With any transformation, there are three key things that need to change: people, processes, and technology. During the investigation of Grenfell led by Dame Judith Hackitt, key findings were shared about the need to ensure better access to information, which is digital, transferrable, and sharable. These requirements have been deeply embedded in a number of regulatory changes.

Many people may think that operating in a digital world and providing accurate, up-to-date information may be difficult and costly to achieve. How do we ensure that our teams are able to adapt to a rapidly changing digital environment without costly training?

People

We work with some incredible organisations that truly wish to embrace change; they have found the benefits of working with us to create an environment of continuous improvement. We work with our clients to develop a true golden thread of information that documents digitally the story of the building for anyone who manages it in the future. Twinnedit works in a way that allows people access to information and data without having to be a software engineer.

The process enables organisations to ensure the creation, management, and sharing of data about a building in digital form. Connecting all the silos together to one “single source of truth” not only delivers the Golden Thread of information but also enhances organisations overall understanding of the residents and the building they are responsible for. Our client users can now see compliance information, fire risk, structural risk, and many other areas in one place for the first time without having to navigate multiple systems.

Harnessing the technology of today and not the outdated hardware and software of yesterday.

Moore’s law is the observation that the chips in a computer double about every two years, but the cost would stay the same. This has now been proven right, so there is no excuse for not harnessing the latest solutions to deliver huge change to resident and building safety and wellness without costing the earth!

But where do you start?
But where do you start?

This seems like a huge undertaking because everything is so fragmented or out of date!? Most organisations are under pressure for time, resources, and funding. While these present competing priorities, the key driver remains keeping people safe.

Companies have tried for many years to develop their own models and software. Some have developed workarounds to try to find effective ways to counter the inflexibility of existing systems or those on the market that still do not do what they need them to. Twinnedit has done this in a way that makes this process and access to information easier.
